When Your Heart Stops Beating
Interscope/Universal
Millions of mall-punks around the world began wailing when blink-182 went on “indefinite hiatus” and singer Tom DeLonge started his Angels & Airwaves project. But former members Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker think you should settle down.
On “Baby Come On,” Hoppus sings “Quit crying your eyes out, isn't there something familiar about me? The past is only the future with the lights on.”
Sure, that seems a little deeper than blink’s less-than-philosophical songs, but the music of offshoot band +44 does indeed sound familiar.
Blink’s hyper-melodic tendencies continue to shine through as does that standard-issue SoCal pop-punk sound, though they now add some new-wave synths, electronic beats and even a welcome dose of Death Cab For Cutie-style delicateness on stand-out “Make You Smile.“
Sure, everything old is new again in this case, but it’s hard to complain when the results are this catchy.
